Camp Geiger at St. Joseph, Missouri
Saturday December 7

A light crowd of nineteen scouts and nine scouters braved the cold to work on scouting skills at Camp Geiger. Knots, compass work, fire building, first aid and cold weather camping were practiced. The weekend started with an inspiring bald eagle fly-by. Mr. Goertz, though recovering from recent surgery, brought out the trailer and helped with our training on Saturday before returning home. He returned (wearing shorts) Sunday morning (can you spell F-R-E-E-Z-E Jeff?) to help tear down camp and drive the trailer home.
Blue beads were the order of the day. Low temperature for the campout was 19 degrees with a much lower wind chill.
Many new scout dishes were prepared including Spanish Rice created by Alex D. The leaders ate well Saturday night with numerous courses including steaks and cobbler (Raul Salmon was head chef) but breakfast would not have impressed Julia Childs (or Julia Roberts).
We also had three injuries reported:
1. Mr. Salmon had a fork in his shirt pocket and he stood up after picking up a dropped object and stabbed Mr. Dunfee in his posterior.
2. Sean (1st year) stood too close to the camp fire and his pants caught on fire. He was wearing the appropriate multiple layers and didn't notice until the flames reached his waist.
3. Ian (1st year) was carrying loose wooden matches in his front pants pocket when he fell down. He struck a rock, which struck his pants, which ignited his matches, which ignited his pants, which ignited his skin. He was treated for second degree burns on the scene. Thanks for assisting in the First Aid demonstrations, Ian.
Scouts, led by their senior patrol leader and Robbie, scattered when Mr. Yameen was seen walking towards the lower camp site. It was later discovered a hedge apple war was in progress prior to his arrival.
At 1 am there were loud haunted screams heard throughout the camp. We never found the origin, though one Troop Scribe suspects Mr. Yameen. Jamiel tried to scare PeeWee with stories of a scout who had suffered a terrible fate at the camp a few years earlier. Was he leading up to his night time fright tape?
