Scouts are showing the temperature, not their IQ's

It was a Clear Coup Night!

Troop 376 was the first to arrive and the last to leave Smithville while participating in Klondike Derby over the weekend of January 24-26, 2003. From the time they left Liberty on Friday and returned at 10 am Sunday, the temperature never rose above 32 degrees. They withstood actual temperatures below zero degrees and wind chills far below that. The winds were so fierce they blew one of the dining flies into the Troop trailer scaring those unsuspecting leaders who had retired early for the evening. This was the second Klondike in three years with temps below zero.

The Wolverine Patrol placed eighth out of 41 sled teams in the competition with their lowest score coming from the Troop 376 measuring station. All they needed to do was take a measuring tape to the measuring pole while it was strapped to the Troop trailer. They are too "Trustworthy" for that.

Scouts learned it's easier to clean up supper plates and pans after supper rather than the following morning when everything is frozen solid. The campfires and snowball fights were too appealing after supper. They also learned putting water bottles in tents doesn't keep them from freezing solid when it is zero degrees outside.

Leaders enjoyed fine dining with chili & dutch oven corn bread for lunch, baked pheasant (thanks to Jamiel for shooting the birds) and rice for supper, followed by dutch oven apple cobbler. Breakfast was sausage and eggs and slushies since the OJ was frozen. District volunteers chose the 376 chili over other troop luncheon menus. Scouts were successful with some  aluminum foil cooking along with spaghetti.

Eleven leaders and eighteen scouts participated in the weekend campout with seven leaders and ten scouts staying both nights. Four leaders (Goertz, Symmonds, Dunfee & Fish) were assisting though their sons were home warm in bed. We appreciate their helping out.

Ryan Salmon asked around who was rooting for the Raiders. After compiling his list, he broke out a giant chocolate chip cookie with the Raiders logo and gave portions to each Raider fan. Buccaneer fans were left drooling. Paybacks are heck, Ryan!

The Wildcat Patrol wins the Oscar Mayer Weiner award for failing to have a single scout attend Klondike.
